Protective Factors

Protective Factors are factors in a person's life that promote mental health and wellbeing.
(Taken from the National Stocktake of Early Intervention Programs 1988)

  • A sense of attachment and belonging

  • Supportive social networks (friends and family)

  • Good relationships with at least one parent

  • Sound psychological development

  • Life skills such as conflict resolution, anger management and problem solving

  • Parents modelling effective problem solving skills

  • Family cohesion and harmony

  • Good social skills

  • Positive coping skills

  • Opportunities for control

  • Access to appropriate levels of income
