Homelessness

Homelessness can be difficult to define. Generally homelessness is defined as living without any family assistance in these circumstances:

  • No accommodation (living in public spaces, cars, tents, on benches, under bridges, etc)
  • Temporary accommodation (living with friends, relatives, moving between housing shelters)
  • Emergency accommodation (refuges, crisis accommodation)
  • Long term accommodation (hostels, youth houses)

Homelessness, according to young people, is often a result of relationship or family breakdown. Children and adolescents are the fastest growing group in Australia’s homeless population.

Other Reasons for leaving home can include:

  • Divorce/separation of parents
  • Being expected to be financially independent
  • Alcohol or drug use
  • Alcohol or drug use of a family member
  • Physical, sexual or emotional abuse
  • Lack of support from parents
  • A parent commences a new relationship
  • A physical or mental illness
  • A physical or mental illness of a family member
  • Pregnancy
  • Being same sex attracted
  • Poverty or low income
  • Early school leaver/ school refusal

Being homeless can be very difficult. Young people have to face barriers such as:

  • Level of income: Getting assistance from Centrelink, you require identification.

  • Finding somewhere appropriate to live. It can be difficult to privately rent if you are under 18 years of age.

  • Affordable accommodation

  • Health issues: Eating food. Also accessing health services such as the doctor, dentist, mental health services. Being hygienic, and presentable.

  • Employment: Trying to get interviews, keeping a job (most don’t have a phone, or there is no credit on their mobile)

  • Education: Staying at school, hard to concentrate when you are trying to find somewhere to live.

  • Safety: Violence on the streets, competition for the warmest and driest areas.

  • Alcohol and Drug use.

  • Legal issues: To survive, some people may resort to stealing or prostitution. Some homeless people may not get access to appropriate legal representation.
